Episode 9 - Fall Decorating Tricks & Treats

Show Notes:

  1. Stick with your style & color palette

Orange is not always the new black! Use the colors you love to decorate with, but in a more muted, subdued tone.

Modern farmhouse is very popular in fall decor. If that’s not your style, don’t worry. There are still other options available.

  2. Address all the senses

Sight - obviously your decor covers this one

Smell - there are plenty of options available to bring in the essence of fall. Candles, room sprays, incense, just to name a few. You can even make your own by simmering apple peels, cinnamon sticks and cloves on the stove or in your slow cooker.

Touch - think cozy throw blankets, sheepskin rugs & textured pillows

Sound - you might think Christmas is the only season that has it’s own music, but we found plenty of playlists on Spotify for fall. Just like the color palette, think moody & mellow. We’re looking at you Slow Jazz!

Taste - The official flavor of the season - PUMPKIN. It doesn’t have to be just for dessert or your favorite latte. Add some pumpkin puree to your favorite chili recipe or Check out these 47 recipes for how to eat pumpkin anytime of the day!

  3. Hang it right

If you will be hanging fall decor such as banners, wreaths or artwork, keep these general guidelines in mind:

Artwork should be hung so the center is a eye level or roughly 60”-64” from the ground. If hanging over a piece of furniture or architectural element, the bottom should be 6 - 8” above.

  4. Halloween to Thanksgiving transition

Have your base decor for fall and sprinkle in a few Halloween items that can easily be removed on November 1. Paper bats in mass create an easy spooky display over your fireplace; paper masks, or real ones, are a fun way to dress up portraits and photos of friends and family; swap out everyday art and photos and replace with printable downloads from Etsy (check out our favorite Etsy store below).

  5. Key Areas

You don’t have to decorate every square inch of your home, unless you want to, you do you! Concentrate on these areas:

    Porch/Entry

    Mantle

    Sofa

    Coffee Table

    Dining Table

  6. Use what you have & modify

Change out existing frames with Halloween & fall printables; colored candles; use existing vases with fall branches & flowers; fill bowls & trays with gourds and pumpkins; use simple greenery wreaths you already have and add dried flowers and other fall elements.
